Bethany S. Whitehurst PE, SE
Bethany Whitehurst has over 15 years of diversified experience as a licensed structural engineer and is a key contributor at the firm. Skilled in laying out gravity and lateral load-resisting systems, she prepares structural drawings and specifications, conducts site visits, and performs quality control reviews of internal structural projects. As Clark Nexsen’s SE 2050 Embodied Carbon Champion, Bethany leads the firm’s internal SE 2050 team on performing life cycle assessments, tracking and reporting embodied carbon, providing firm education on structural sustainability, and developing EC reduction strategies.
Outside the firm, her advocacy for lower carbon construction has resulted in her founding the Sustainable Design Committee within the Structural Engineers Association of North Carolina, participating in the Specification Working Group of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations’ Sustainable Design Committee, and being a part of the American Concrete Institute’s ACI 323 Low-Carbon Concrete Code Subcommittee F. A frequent presenter to AEC organizations she shares insights on cross-disciplinary sustainability coordination and collaborates with peers across the industry to advance best practices. Passionate about outreach, Bethany also engages with K–12 students to inspire the next generation of engineers.
