The explosion of the craft beer industry across the United States has generated economic transformation in areas that embrace it. Now commonly considered the mark of an active, artistic community, local craft breweries increase foot traffic, support their local economies, and foster new connections between area residents. JBK Southern, Inc. sought to combine the best attributes of their experiences in European pubs, often the hub of their community, with a design concept that is unique in the Macon, GA beer scene.

Throughout our partnership, both our design team and the client emphasized high quality craftsmanship – from the beer and food itself to the brewpub design. Today, Ocmulgee Brewpub welcomes customers with a clean, open, and bright design that showcases historic architectural elements and complements the industrial appearance of the stainless steel brewing tanks. Featuring communal-style tables, the space creates opportunities for community members to make new connections by eliminating visual and physical barriers and encouraging conversation. The design concept contrasts a simple palette of whites and grays with historic elements such as the tin ceiling, refinished hardwood floor, and original elevator hoist beam, which has been repurposed as a light fixture. Large wall graphics include the Ocmulgee Brewpub logo and a historic map of downtown Macon, reinforcing the sense of place and local pride. The brewpub features two bars, one for beer and one for food; a full-service kitchen; the large brewhouse seating area; restrooms; and a meat prep room downstairs.

Clark Nexsen provided brand and visual identity design in addition to architecture and engineering services, enabling the design team to fully integrate the branded visual elements throughout the space.
