When the existing Route 60 Bridge over Smith Creek in downtown Clifton Forge reached the end of its safe and useful life, the Clark Nexsen team partnered with Orders Construction Company to design the Route 60 Bridge Replacement, a new, 165 foot long x 53 foot wide bridge.

Located on Main Street in the heart of downtown, the new bridge is directly adjacent to existing historic buildings. In response to key concerns including the importance of enabling local businesses to remain operational, our design-build team implemented an aggressive construction schedule that involved much of the material being pre-fabricated and delivered to the site ready to install. Additionally, our team was continuously monitoring for vibrations to protect the surrounding, historically significant buildings. Clark Nexsen’s bridge and transportation engineers were responsible for managing surveying, hydraulic and geotechnical subconsultants, roadway design, signal design, traffic control plans, bridge design, and obtaining all water related permits, including VRMC and Corps of Engineers on behalf of the lead contractor and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

Committed to improving traffic and pedestrian safety, the new bridge is designed to feature approximately 9 foot wide sidewalks on both sides of the bridge, with two 11 foot travel lanes and is compatible with the Clifton Forge downtown revitalization master plan.
