AIA North Carolina recently announced the 2016 Design Award recipients, recognizing Clark Nexsen with four design awards. The Bioprocess Innovation Center, Regional Plant Teaching Facility, and RDU Terminal 1 Renovation earned awards for design excellence. The Coastal Studies Institute Research Building received the AIANC COTE Award for sustainability and environmental features.
Honor Award – Bioprocess Innovation Center
The Bioprocess Innovation Center is a cutting-edge laboratory facility that fosters interaction between scientists while providing a strong visual connection to the forest on this heavily wooded site.
Honor Award – Regional Plant Teaching Facility
The Regional Plant Teaching Facility at Wake Tech Community College creates a gateway to the campus and acts as a symbol of the merging of technology, education, and sustainability. While the building’s program is comprised of spaces to house heating and cooling equipment, it is also an educational facility for teaching students and the public about energy efficient building systems.
Merit Award – RDU Terminal 1 Renovation
From curbside to ticketing to security screening to boarding, the passenger experience was carefully considered in the renovation of Terminal 1. This major transformation focused on enhancing the air passenger experience to provide a light-filled contemporary terminal experience.
Cote Award – Coastal Studies Institute
Located on the banks of Roanoke Island, the mission of the Coastal Studies Institute Research Building is to be a model of sustainability in its response to the land and water. The building touches the ground lightly and interacts with the landscape through its site walls, natural lawns, and covered outdoor spaces.
The AIA North Carolina Design Awards was comprised of jury chair Anne Schopf, FAIA, design partner at Mahlum; Sian Roberts, FAIA, architect and partner at Miller Hull Partnership; and Gundula Proksch, professor at University of Washington School of Architecture.
