Blue Ridge Orthodontics Named a Wood Design Award Winner

Blue Ridge Orthodontics Office in Asheville, North Carolina; Architect: Clark NexsenWood Products Council has announced the winners of its 2019 WoodWorks Wood Design Awards, which celebrate innovation and excellence in U.S. wood building design. Blue Ridge Orthodontics in Asheville, NC was named a 2019 Regional Wood Design Excellence Award winner.

The awards are an opportunity to recognize building designers for their skill and ingenuity, and to showcase projects that demonstrate the attributes of wood that make it so appealing. For Blue Ridge Orthodontics, transparency, views, and an unexpected warmth from wood define the new office as a patient-centered oasis for dental care. The soaring roof, with a soffit clad in tongue-and-groove pine, features a deep overhang to frame views to the exterior, while floor-to-ceiling windows bring natural light inside. This fluid transition—further accentuated by pine cladding that extends seamlessly to the interior ceiling—highlights the stark contrast between the angular roof and a sculptural wood wall that defines the central space.

Sculptural Wall and Detail; Blue Ridge Orthodontics in Asheville, NC; Architect: Clark NexsenBuilt on a six-inch plinth, this nine-foot-tall wall is constructed using 136 layers of CNC-cut poplar plywood, assembled into sections off site. The same plywood layers were used to clad cabinetry and desks for a unified, natural aesthetic. The striking design creates a uniquely remarkable environment, turning a mundane orthodontist appointment into an unexpected retreat.

Chosen from close to 100 nominations, the awards will be presented at Wood Design Symposiums across the country, beginning with the Southeast Wood Design Symposium in Birmingham, AL on February 28, 2019. Seven projects, including Blue Ridge Orthodontics, will receive Regional Excellence Awards. See a complete list of winners.
