Joel Helms has more than two decades of design and construction administration experience with a variety of building types and scales including K-12, higher education, and municipal projects. A senior architect in the Asheville office, his projects have received design awards from the AIA and been published in Architectural Record. His leadership in sustainable building design includes the LEED Gold certified Gorges State Park Visitor Center, and the expansion of Carrington Hall School of Nursing at UNC Chapel Hill, the first LEED certified building in the UNC system. Recent projects include Lake Norman Charter School, Asheville Middle School, and more than 200,000 square-feet of commercial development and building renovations.

Joel has served as a visiting design juror at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is a member of both the North Carolina and Asheville AIA chapters, and the USGBC Charlotte chapter. He is a certified green globes professional, and a CSI construction documents technologist. He has a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas, Austin, and a Bachelor of Architecture from Florida A&M University. Joel is active within the Daniel Boone Council of the Boy Scouts of America as an adult leader, receiving the District Award of Merit in 2009 for outstanding service.
