Highrise Standpipe Design: A Case History

Rick Alpert recently published an article in the July/August edition of Sprinkler Age magazine. Sprinkler Age is the membership publication of the American Fire Sprinkler Association. The article is a follow-up to a previous article Rick authored on standpipe systems for the magazine. He provides a case history perspective on highrise standpipe design based on the River Tower at Harbor’s Edge project which is currently under construction in downtown Norfolk.

He discusses the following issues:
The type of standpipe system required
Where the required hose outlets are located
The required flow rate of the system
The required pressure at the hose outlet/s
The requirements for the fire department connection

Rick Alpert is a senior fire protection engineer with over 35 years of experience in the design, construction management, and commissioning of public, private and commercial projects, including highrise buildings. In addition to his engineering career Rick has been involved with the volunteer fire service for over 40 years and has served in many leadership positions within local fire departments. He holds several national certifications including ICC Building Plans Reviewer and Pro Board Fire Officer II.
